Day Activities at Amphlett Hall, Crown Close, Bromsgrove.

Amphlett Memorial Hall is the base for our activities on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays:

Tuesday Club is based around a Social Drop In - open to any older person for a ‘chat and a cuppa and/or a light lunch’ on Tuesday mornings from 10:00am to 12.00 noon. Charges are made for refreshments and/or lunches only (£1.50 lunch, 50p tea/coffee). We hope however that social groups will naturally form from among those who attend, and anticipate that those groups will wish, perhaps with our support, to organise activities of their own. Additional charges may then apply to those activities. The following groups already operate:

Social Arts and Crafts – bring your own materials and share and develop your interests and talents with like minded people over a ‘cuppa’ meeting on a Tuesday  morning between 10.00 and 12.00.  Charge £1.50 per session plus refreshments as required.

Computer Club - on Tuesday afternoons from 1:30pm to 3:30pm; Beginners and Intermediate Groups. Open to anyone interested in using computer technology to email, manipulate photographs, word process and much more. Supported by a volunteer tutor, members share and learn over a ‘cuppa’ Most members bring their own ‘laptop’ but we have a few machines to loan for the sessions and WiFi broad band connectivity is provided. Charge £2.00 per session plus refreshments. In addition we have volunteers who can provide beinngers with one to one sessions of one hour at Amphlett Hall on a Wednesday morning at 10.00 am and 11.00 am, cost £3.50 per session.

Gentle Exercise - we all know that exercising will help to improve your quality of life and that once you begin to exercise you can benefit in many ways, but many older people are discouraged from exercising because they are not sure how much exercise they could manage, or they are put off by the image of gyms and all that goes with them. If that includes you then why not start with one of our ‘Gentle Exercise’ Groups. All the exercises are carried out in a group whilst you are seated and are performed to various types of music, so they not only get you going but they are great fun and very sociable too. Our sessions run from 10.30 to 11.30 on a Tuesday morning, are run by a trained leader and cost £2.50 per session plus refreshments.

Thursday Club is a new part of Age Concern Bromsgrove & District’s activities. Run by experienced staff and volunteers, it offers an opportunity for local people over the age of 50 who are beginning to experience some form of memory loss, and their carers, to enjoy: a relaxed social environment, the opportunity to meet people with similar situations, the opportunity to join in activities designed to stimulate their memory, the opportunity to join in a Gentle Exercise session [see Tuesday], the opportunity to listen to guest speakers, and the opportunity to participate in periodic outings or entertainment

Meetings run from 10.00am to 3.00pm and it is possible to join in for the whole of that period or to ‘drop in’ for an hour or so and have a cup of tea and a chat. Refreshments and a light lunch are available. There is charge for lunch plus a small attendance charge totalling a maximum of £7.00 for someone who joins in the whole day’s activities.  We can also arrange local transport, if required, for an additional charge of £4.00. You do not need to book, if you would like to come and see if it works for you then there will be a warm welcome waiting for you.

Friday Club  Run by a carer and team of experienced volunteers offers the opportunity for people over the age of 50 who are self-caring but less able bodied who can, with some support, benefit from different company and simple activities. Activities are broadly the same as those for the Thursday Club above (except Tai Chi which does not run on a Friday). Meetings run from 10.00 am to 2.30 pm and it is again possible to join for the whole of this period or drop in for an hour or so. Refreshments and a hot lunch are available. There is a charge for lunch and a small attendance charge, total £7.00 for the whole day activities. We are also able to arrange local transport to and from the Centre - charge as Thursday.

Referrals can be made to us from a variety of sources; GPs, Community Psychiatric Nurses, Social Workers, Nurse Advisors to Older People and through self-referral.

On a typical Friday our clients arrive at 10.00 am. They start the day with a coffee and a chat to catch upon the week’s news. A variety of activities are then possible during morning including:

  • Board Games
  • Talks and demonstrations
  • Quizzes
  • Craft Work

Lunch is served at 12.00am, followed by a cup of tea and a game of bingo or other activity. The day ends at 2.30pm when transport arrives for the journey home.
