Gentle Exercise for All Abilities

We all know that exercising will help to improve your quality of life and that once you begin to exercise you can the benefit in many ways, through better health, balance, strength, suppleness and mobility. And that these lead to a greater independence in later life, reduced stress, improved sleep and a sense of achievement as you feel yourself more able to cope with everyday tasks.

But many older people are discouraged from exercising because they are not sure how much exercise they could manage, or they are put off by the image of gyms and all that goes with them.

If that includes you then why not start with one of our ‘Gentle Exercise’ Groups. All the exercises are carried out in a group whilst you are seated and are performed to various types of music, so they not only get you going but they are great fun and very sociable too.

Our sessions are run at Amphlett Memorial Hall, every Tuesday from 10.30 to 11.30 and every Thursday from 11.00 to 12.00. Aimed at helping to keep you mobile – and keeping you giggling they are lead by a qualified tutor. There is a charge of £2.00 per session plus refreshments.

 Tai Chi

Age Concern in Bromsgrove are offering a new addition to their activity groups at Amphlett Hall in Crown Close – a regular weekly daytime Tai Chi class starting at 2.30pm on Thursday afternoons.

Running alongside the ongoing afternoon activities of our ‘Thursday Club’ [which supports local older people who are beginning to experience issues around memory loss], the new Tai Chi group offers exercises designed for standing and seated participants of all ages and all abilities. The exercises are led by Alan Sanson from the ‘Painting the Rainbow Association’.

Having run taster sessions with existing users of Amphlett Hall, the vast majority  told him that one of their greatest fears is that of falling over and the potentially life changing loss of confidence that could result. A key aspect of the exercises that Alan leads therefore is around helping preventing falls and the fear of falling. ‘We work’ he says ‘on mental and physical balance, posture, mindfulness, relaxation, movement awareness and body alignment’ but, he adds most strongly, ‘we also have fun!’. There is a charge of £2.50 per session plus refreshments.
