Who do we help? Age Concern Bromyard & District provides free information and advice services, and a range of specialist projects, to adults aged 50+ across 32 villages and a small market town in north east Herefordshire. We began in 1989 in the Bible House in Bromyard when a team of dedicated volunteers opened for two hours weekly to provide support to older adults in the District.  In 1994 the Charity was constituted. It is now staffed by a small, part-time team  and open for public enquiries between 10.00 a.m. and 1.00 p.m. Monday to Thursday. Our office is at 5 Broad Street, Bromyard.

How many enquiries do we handle? Despite our size we handle a high volume of enquiries, mostly by telephone on our Information number, 01885 483483.  We also receive between 4 and 6 visitors daily at the drop-in centre, and undertake booked home visits for adults with limited mobility and transport. In the past year we have received 5232 enquiries, of which 45% are for finance and welfare benefits advice.  Our team has secured over £65,000 in unclaimed welfare benefits for older, vulnerable adults, many of whom have disabilities.  We also handle a large number of health and social care enquiries.  The main aim of our services is to ensure older adults have a decent quality of life. We hope that our services allow adults to maintain supported independent living in their own home.

Welcoming volunteers of all ages and experience: In order to deliver these services we rely heavily on our volunteers.  We welcome volunteers of all ages, particularly those from currently under-represented groups which include both younger volunteers and adults seeking work experience who are unemployed.  Volunteers are offered training for their roles, and ongoing guidance and support from our Volunteer Manager, Sarah Crowley, and our Project Officers.  We hope volunteers value their experiences with our clients as much as we value their huge commitment and time.  If you would like to know more about the opportunities volunteering can offer, please contact Sarah Crowley on 01885 483483 or via This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it

Encouraging  new trustees: Our Executive Committee meets four times annually and is currently recruiting new Trustees.  We also have a specialist management sub committee which meets every two months.  We welcome applications from any adult empathetic with the needs of the rural community. We are keen to encourage applicants with experience of the business sector or statutory services, reflecting the changes we are now making in our business strategy to ensure we sustain long-term funding.  Enquiries should be addressed to Lynne Wilkins, Chair, Age Concern Bromyard & District, 5 Broad Street, Bromyard HR7 4BS or through the Chief Officer, Elspeth McPherson via This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it
